The post Nick Fowler Sets Men’s Overall and Self-Supported Pacific Crest Trail FKT appeared first on iRunFar.

A rising tide lifts all ships, and the seas are swelling on the Pacific Crest Trail for the second time this summer.

On Saturday, August 22, 2026, Nick Fowler reset the men’s overall and self-supported Pacific Crest Trail fastest known time, completing the 2,653-mile trail in 45 days, 17 hours, and 47 minutes.

This took about two and a half hours off Aurélien Sanchez’s men’s supported record of 45 days, 20 hours, and 15 minutes, set just shy of a month earlier. Notably, Fowler completed the route in a self-supported fashion, finishing faster than all previous supported completions.

The Pacific Crest Trail is one of the U.S.’s “big 3” long trails — along with the Appalachian Trail and Continental Divide Trail. The route stretches across the western United States, from the U.S.-Mexico border at Campo, California, to the U.S.-Canada border at Manning Provincial Park in British Columbia. Along the way, it passes through the Sonoran and Mojave deserts and traverses the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Range. It takes in some 24 national forests, seven national parks, 33 wilderness areas, and crosses three states — California, Oregon, and Washington. The route accumulates approximately 400,000 feet (121,920 meters) of elevation over its 2,653 miles (4,270 kilometers).

Unlike Sanchez and most other previous fastest known time (FKT) holders, Fowler covered the trail from north to south. He averaged a remarkable 56.7 miles (91k) per day over those 45-plus days, spending up to 18 hours on the trail, and reported consuming 12,000 calories per day. Fowler completed the run self-supported, carrying all his camping gear and water, plus days of food at a time between resupply locations. He had arranged for the food and supplies he collected along the way, including numerous fresh pairs of shoes. The decision to complete the run southbound meant finishing in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit in southern California’s summer.

Incredibly, this was Fowler’s second successful self-supported Pacific Crest Trail FKT. On his last outing in 2023, he covered the route in a then-record 52 days, 9 hours, and 18 minutes. His recent effort cut that down by almost a week.
He told iRunFar, “The most special part was being surprised by my wife, Hannah, and son, Canyon, at the end. Canyon was born exactly one year to the day after I completed the PCT in 2023, so getting to see him at the end of this journey made the whole thing feel especially full circle.”

He also acknowledged the support of the previous record holder, Sanchez, and said, “[Sanchez] was cheering me on throughout the adventure.” He added, “One of my greatest takeaways is that big things can happen when you’re surrounded by true friends who believe in you: JJ, Katie, Jameson, Stefan, and Chris, as well as a few others — it couldn’t have been done without their (virtual) support. They believed in me more than I believed in myself.”

A long trail specialist, in 2024, Fowler also set the overall FKT on the 817-mile Arizona Trail. He also holds self-supported records for the 407-mile Oregon Coast Trail, the 230-mile Ozark Trail in Missouri, and the 1,200-mile Pacific Northwest Trail in Washington, Idaho, and Montana.

The Pacific Crest Trail has been a hotly contested FKT in recent years. For the men, and prior to Sanchez breaking it earlier this summer, it had been held by Karel Sabbe, whose 2023 time of 46 days, 12 hours, and 50 minutes bested Timothy Olson’s 2021 time of 51 days, 16 hours, and 55 minutes. Olson’s time had in turn beaten Sabbe’s previous record of 52 days, 8 hours, and 25 minutes. All of these runs were completed with support, which means the athletes had crews along the way providing food, sleeping quarters, pacers, and more.

By breaking the men’s overall FKT with a self-supported run, Nick Fowler truly has raised the tide on this trail.
