Converse and BEAMS have reworked the ALL STAR J for a collaborative release marking the Japanese retailer's 50th anniversary. The project centers on the ALL STAR as it looked in 1976, the year BEAMS opened, and treats that founding date as the design brief. Both a low OX and a high-top HI carry the theme, each finished to resemble a canvas sneaker that has already logged years of wear.
The ALL STAR is Converse's defining model, in production since 1917 with a silhouette that has barely changed across the century since. That continuity is what makes it work as an anniversary canvas, since there is a recognizable baseline to reinterpret. For its 50th year, BEAMS has dated the reference precisely, drawing on the 1976 version of the ALL STAR to line up with its own origins and to express the shared history between the two names.
Everything sits on washed black canvas, a treatment that fades the fabric into the faded-black tone the colorway takes its name from. The construction then follows late-1970s cues: side stitching and cotton laces revive the earlier ALL STAR spec, while the high-top adds a notched ankle patch true to the period. The heel label reads "MADE FOR BEAMS," and the binding tape is finished in an unbleached ecru that reads as aged rather than new.
Inside, the insole carries both names, pairing Converse's "MADE IN JAPAN" mark with the BEAMS logo in a double-branded layout specific to this release. Both cuts are made in Japan. The vintage logic runs through to the packaging, which comes in a box modeled on Converse's 1970s design, so the collaboration invites attention to its era and backstory as much as to the shoe.
