Basic.Space is taking over Christie's Beverly Hills with a selling exhibition of 50 chairs, which gathers design classics alongside contemporary pieces.
Named "50 Chairs at Christie's", the auction has been curated by Basic.Space and will feature works created by, and also owned by, famed designers.
For Basic.Space founder Jesse Lee, the event is designed to cater to the "next generation of collectors", pairing cult favourites such as Gufram's huge Pratone lounge chair with classics like Charles and Ray Eames' LCW in a rare calfskin edition.
"Discovery has always been at the heart of Basic.Space and our ecosystem of designers, artists and creatives," says Lee, who founded the platform in 2020 and has spent recent years making his way into the field through IRL experiences and the acquisition of industry tentpole Design Miami.
"We are redefining luxury for the next generation of collectors. 50 Chairs at Christie’s is an expression of that ethos - showcasing iconic works from the past alongside original pieces from the voices shaping the future of design."
On the more historical end of the spectrum, a hammered-brass chair by Philippe Hiquily made in the 1970s has been put forwards by Kelly Wearstler, and comedian, filmmaker and design collector Eric Wareheim is parting with Joe Colombo's molded-fiberglass Elda Chair from 1963. Los Angeles furniture designer BASA is contributing Gufram's oversized Pratone lounge chair, and collectors Giampiero Tagliaferri and Adrien Dewulf have supplied a CL9 ribbon chair.
The contemporary side leans more on pieces from collectible design galleries. Carpenters Workshop Gallery is bringing Rick Owens' Stag Stool, a limited edition in black plywood and natural moose antler, and The Future Perfect has supplied Seoul-based SeungJin Yang's Lounge Chair 01 – Transparent Blue, formed from balloons and resin. Sam Klemick's Trumpet Dining Chair works the fluidity of textiles into solid wood, while Los Angeles furniture and decorative arts dealer JF Chen is contributing pieces by multidisciplinary artist and audiophile Devon Turnbull, California sculptor Vince Skelly and London-based Max Lamb.
50 Chairs at Christie's runs September 25 to 30, 2026, at Christie's Beverly Hills, 336 North Camden Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210, with a VIP preview taking place on September 24.
