IKEA plans to launch an online marketplace in the United Kingdom that will allow consumers to buy and sell pre-owned IKEA furniture and housewares, PA Media reported Tuesday (Aug. 18).

Members of IKEA Family will be able to connect with one another through the platform, according to the report.

“With the launch of Ikea second-hand marketplace in the U.K., we’re taking a meaningful step toward creating a destination that simplifies access to pre-owned Ikea furniture,” an IKEA spokesperson said in the report. “We’re creating a trusted and vibrant space to make it quick and easy for our Ikea Family members to trade directly with one another.”

IKEA said it would provide more details about the U.K. platform in the coming months. It did not confirm a launch date, per the report.

IKEA UK did not immediately reply to PYMNTS’ request for comment.

Ingka Group, an IKEA retailer that operates in 31 markets, said in an August 2024 press release that it had begun testing a secondhand marketplace called Ikea Preowned in Madrid and Oslo.

“The global secondhand furniture market is growing rapidly, with a projected annual growth rate of 6.4% in 2024,” Jesper Brodin, who was CEO of Ingka Group at the time, said in an August 2024 press release. “Already today, 10% of the secondhand home furnishing market is made up by IKEA products. With this platform we see possibilities to simplify and enhance experience for both sellers and buyers.”

It was reported at the time that with the secondhand marketplace, customers can enter the item they want to sell, along with pictures and the price they’re offering, while IKEA’s artificial intelligence-powered database adds its own promotional images and measurements. From there, the buyer can collect the furniture straight from the seller, who can either receive money or get a voucher from IKEA with a 15% bonus.

In July 2025, Malin Cleverdal, who was opportunity leader at Ingka Group at the time, said the company had secondhand marketplaces operating in three markets and planned to expand it to more.

“We get really positive reviews,” Cleverdal said in an interview posted on the Ingka Group website. “User scores are steady at 4.4 out of 5. We are just moving from pilot to running business. We’re confident we’re meeting consumers where they have a need.”
