Walmart will soon begin rolling out tap to pay as a payment option at Walmart and Sam’s Club locations, the company said in a Friday (Aug. 21) press release.
The retailer will begin enabling tap to pay at select stores and clubs on Monday (Aug. 24) and plans to roll it out to all U.S. locations by the end of 2026 and to fuel stations by mid-2027, according to the release.
“Tap to Pay gives customers and members another familiar and convenient way to pay at checkout using contactless payment methods,” Walmart said in the release. “Whether picking up groceries, gifts or everyday essentials, they can check out using eligible contactless card, phone or smartwatch.”
Google said in a Friday blog post that Walmart and Sam’s Club shoppers will be able to tap to pay using Google Pay as this option is rolled out. Customers will be able to add their preferred card to Google Wallet and then check out with Google Pay.
“Tap to pay using Google Pay is a proven time-saver for in-store shoppers, and now, we’re excited to bring that convenience to Walmart customers,” Stavan Parikh, vice president and general manager, payments at Google, said in the post.
Walmart also said in its Friday press release that Walmart and Sam’s Club customers and members can add their eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to their digital wallets, “giving them another convenient way to use their cards.”
OnePay said in a Friday press release that it expanded its support for Apple Pay. The consumer FinTech company’s customers can now add their OnePay CashRewards Card to Apple Wallet and use Apple Pay wherever it’s accepted, including select Walmart U.S. locations. Later this fall, users will be able to add their OnePay Builder Card to Apple Wallet. The OnePay Debit Card has supported Apple Pay since 2022.
“Apple Pay is an undeniable part of how so many consumers pay — and we’re excited to bring that same speed and simplicity to our entire card lineup this year and allow customers to use OnePay seamlessly wherever Apple Pay is accepted,” OnePay Senior Executive Adi Sharma said in the release.
The PYMNTS Intelligence report “Apply Pay @11: Usage is Up, but Competitors are Gaining Ground” found that over 30% of shoppers now use mobile wallets in stores weekly, and 16% use Apple Pay in particular.
