Square Enix used gamescom Opening Night Live to debut fresh gameplay footage for the final entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogyThe Weapons return as reworked set-piece battles, with several reserved as ultra-hard postgame encounters that nod to their roles in the 1997 originalNew systems on show include the FITS outfits, the Typhon summon, and a fully explorable planet reached through the airship Highwind

Square Enix has pulled back the curtain on Final Fantasy VII Revelation, using its gamescom Opening Night Live slot to walk players through the mechanical guts of the trilogy's finale. The new trailer trains its focus on the Weapons, the towering guardians that surface as the planet slides toward collapse, and positions them as some of the most demanding fights the reimagined series has staged so far.

The Weapons anchor the reveal. In the footage, these enormous entities rise to defend a world in crisis but draw no line between ally and threat, tearing through the planet and its inhabitants alike. Cloud and his party confront them across three distinct combat environments: open desert, aerial dogfights, and the ocean floor. A late-game fixture of the original release, the Weapons come back here as standout encounters, and a portion of them are walled off as ultra-challenging endgame battles built as an homage to how they functioned in 1997.

On the systems side, the trailer introduced FITS, a new outfit mechanic that hands characters specialized abilities and higher performance ceilings depending on what they wear. Each set maps to a role that evokes the classic Final Fantasy job structure, and the footage put Cloud and Tifa in their Warrior and Black Mage FITS to demonstrate the idea. Alongside it, Square Enix showed off the Typhon summon as a new option in the party's arsenal.

Traversal got its own spotlight. The entire planet is open for exploration by way of the Highwind airship, and players can drop in almost anywhere via parachute, moving from sky to ground without a hard break. The trailer paired that freedom with grappling hook and Chocobo mounts, framing movement as a core pillar rather than connective filler. With Meteor bearing down and the Weapons spreading chaos, the game leans into a divide-and-conquer structure, letting players choose where to go, who to aid, and in what sequence as the world fights for its own survival.

Underpinning all of it is the series' hybrid battle system, which lets players toggle between real-time action and Tactical Mode. For Revelation, Square Enix says the system has been widened with new playable characters and fresh abilities. Decisions made across the journey can also shape aspects of individual characters' stories, adding a branching layer to the finale.

For anyone carrying over history from earlier entries, save data from Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth unlocks bonuses in Revelation: the Chocobo & Moogle summon materia from the former and the Phoenix summon materia from the latter.

Watch the trailer above. Final Fantasy VII Revelation arrives in Spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox on PC. The game is open for wishlisting across all platforms now, and the first two chapters, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, are available to play in the meantime.
